Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research

Making sense of the social world

About us

One of the founding departments at Kent, the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research has built a worldwide reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting and dynamic places to study a range of social science subjects.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are diverse and innovative. We combine high quality teaching and cutting-edge research with a supportive environment that attracts students from all over the world. We are proud of our:

Valuable partnerships

We have established valuable partnerships as:

  • a member of the Eastern ARC consortium of social science research universities
  • a South East ESRC Doctoral Training Centre
  • the leading institute for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Cultural and Global Criminology – a unique and distinctive PhD programme.

Each of these partnerships provides opportunities for funding, collaboration and networking for our students and staff.

Cutting-edge research

Our research is organised into themed clusters and independent centres.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) gave our School the highest rating possible for our research environment.

International outlook

We pride ourselves on our international outlook, which is reflected in the number of study abroad opportunities we can offer our students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Interdisciplinary approach

We value an interdisciplinary approach, as shown by the number of joint honours undergraduate options we provide. For those who prefer to pursue a single honours degree, there is the option to take ‘wild modules’ from any other School in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
