The University has again supported the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards as lead sponsor.

More than 50 inspirational teachers, education professionals and volunteers were honoured at the Awards ceremony at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes hotel on Friday 18 May 2018.

The awards which aim to spread best practice to all education professionals in the county and celebrate excellence and achievement in teaching attracted a record-breaking 1,200 nominations this year.

Special guests at the event, organised by the KM Charity Team included Kent County Council cabinet member for education Roger Gough, and celebrated children’s author and literacy ambassador for the KM Charity Team, Nick Butterworth.

Fifty-four staff and teams representing 49 schools and colleges were named as district winners with 23 crowned best in Kent.

The Gulbenkian Theatre Arts Award for Inspiring Creativity and Innovation, presented by Liz Moran, Director of Arts & Culture at Kent, was awarded to Clive Soord, Canterbury College. Kent Bioscience Teacher of the Year, presented by Dr Anastasios Tsaousis, School of Biosciences, to Jaco Du Plooy, Norton Knatchbull School, Ashford.

Steven Holdcroft, Assistant Director, Enrolment Management Services, presented the Overall Executive Head Teacher of the Year award to Steve Davies, Sheerness West Federation and the Sports Teacher of the Year for Shepway District to Kavan Risby, Palmarsh Primary. Overall Kent Music Teacher of the Year, presented by Richard Lightman, Centre for Music and Audio Technology, was won by Mark Heaton, Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone and Overall Kent Physical Science Teacher of the Year, presented by Cordelia Scott, School of Physical Sciences, went to Jade Wells, Strood Academy.
