Sophie Dixon with Peter Heslip, director of Visual Art, Arts Council England, and the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth.

A Fine Art graduate from the School of Music and Fine Art has been awarded the prestigious 2014 Platform award.

The Platform award is the most prestigious award available to a graduating student in any arts discipline from across the south east.

Sophie Dixon, a 2014 Kent Fine Art graduate, was one of five shortlisted graduates who each exhibited their work at five south east galleries (Aspex, Portsmouth; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill; Modern Art Oxford; MK Gallery, Milton Keynes and Turner Contemporary, Margate). These exhibits were judged by a panel of experts, with the final shortlist also undertaking a rigorous presentation and interview process.

Sophie was presented her award by Peter Heslip, director of Visual Art, Arts Council England, and the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth.

She will receive a bursary of £2500 together with 12 months of support and mentoring from an experienced art professional.

Entitled ‘And Only Fine Threads Hold Us To Each Moment’, Sophie’s works consists of a 50 page book, prints and written text about Srbská, formerly Wünschendorf, a small village on the Czech Republic’s modern-day border with Poland.

A video installation Wünschendorf, explores the irreversible changes that the Second World War wrought on the lives of millions, a period of loss and displacement which continues to influence the world today.

The Platform project is integrated into Fine Art students’ third year and is part of the School of Music and Fine Art‘s ongoing partnership with the Turner Contemporary, Margate. The award supports graduate professional development and nurtures emerging artists from universities across the South East region.
