Congratulations to Professor Karen Douglas and Dr Emma L Veale recognised on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list for 2025.
The list recognises those who are ranked in the top 1% of researchers worldwide by citations in their fields and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past eleven years. Professor Douglas and Dr Veale’s inclusion on the list is a testament to the significant and broad influence they have made in their fields of research.
Dr Emma L Veale is a Senior Research Fellow at the Medway School of Pharmacy. For nearly two decades, she has explored how potassium channels influence disease and how they can be targeted for new treatments, particularly for pain. Her extensive industry collaborations have earned her two Royal Society Industry Fellowships. Sponsored by Metrion Biosciences, Emma is currently working on translating peptides found in venom into novel therapeutics. She has also led award-winning primary care interventions, including projects on atrial fibrillation and post-surgical opioid tapering.

Karen Douglas, Professor of Social Psychology, joined the School of Psychology in 2005 and has since established herself as an expert in the psychology of conspiracy theories. Alongside imparting her knowledge to undergraduate and postgraduate students through social psychology modules, she maintains a database of conspiracy theory literature for use by her peers. Her current £2.5 million project, funded by the European Research Council, is examining the consequences of conspiracy theories for individuals, groups and society.
She said of the listing: ‘I am delighted that my research with fabulous collaborators at the University of Kent and beyond, and with the amazing ERC-funded CONSPIRACY_FX team, has been recognised for a third year running.’
