Undoing Popular Sovereignty; Neoliberal Governmentality and the Rise of Authoritarian Populism in Indonesia. (Title TBC)

This research aims to investigate the influence of neoliberal governmentality to Indonesia’s economy and political as well as social landscape. Moreover, the research seeks whether legal and institutional apparatus facilitate or resist the erosion of popular sovereignty as a fundamental principle of modern constitutional democracy, including Indonesia.

Teaching

His academic interests span constitutional law, Islamic law, legal methodology, and socio-political studies. He holds a Master of Law from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, where his thesis examined the management of Indonesia’s Hajj Fund from the perspective of public finance law, and a Bachelor of Law from State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, with a thesis focused on the Rohingya crisis through the lens of international human rights law and Islamic legal thought.

Roqiyul has teaching experience in Indonesia at the State Islamic University (UIN) Siber Syekh Nurjati, where he lectured on several subjects, including Adat Law (Adat Recht), Pancasila, International Law, and Administrative Court Procedural Law (Hukum Acara Peradilan Tata Usaha Negara).

Beyond academia, he has been actively involved in literacy movements, Islamic education councils, and national standardization boards under the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). He is also an engaged member of various Islamic and civil society organizations, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary legal research and public scholarship.
