Overview

Through dynamic, task-based training and communication-focused activities, you will elevate both your language and intercultural communication skills, working towards a command of the Arabic language that meets upper-intermediate to advanced proficiency levels. You will explore a rich array of compelling topics, analysing authentic materials that highlight contemporary cultural debates and contexts across the Arab world. This worldwide exploration of diverse artistic, social, and political landscapes will enhance your language abilities while sharpening your critical thinking skills, empowering you to articulate informed perspectives on a wide range of issues. By actively participating in lively discussions, engaging presentations, and hands-on assignments, you will refine your communicative prowess, equipping yourself to navigate complex conversations and cultural exchanges with confidence and finesse.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1) Read and write in Arabic at an upper-intermediate to advanced level, showcasing an ability to engage with a variety of texts, contexts, and media
2) Utilise confidently with a range of Arabic expressions and idioms appropriate for upper-intermediate to advanced discussions, with enhanced expressive capacity
3) Develop an upper-intermediate to advanced understanding of key themes and concepts in authentic materials related to contemporary cultural issues encountered in Arabic-speaking countries.
4) Articulate well-reasoned arguments and exchange information effectively in Arabic, utilising a flexible range of structures on a broad range of topics.
5) Critically evaluate and comprehend the diverse cultures and lifestyles of Arabic-speaking countries, integrating this knowledge into discussions and analyses at an upper-intermediate to advanced level.
