Overview

Physical activity has an important function in the management of many clinical conditions. You’ll learn how the health, wellbeing and quality of life benefits of being active can help to manage, treat and even reverse some chronic conditions. What kind of activities can clinical populations take part in? How can activities be adapted to make them safe and manageable? You’ll learn how to safely perform appropriate exercise tests, how to interpret test results and use them to develop suitable physical activity prescription based on disease specific guidelines and research evidence. You will explore innovative approaches to therapeutic exercise training for cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders. Building on what you learned in stages 1 and 2, you’ll develop tailored exercise prescription which utilise principles of training, accommodate disease limitations and medications, and expand your thinking to address the bio-psychosocial and adherence challenges in clinical groups.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1. Critically analyse the role of different modes of exercise for a range of chronic clinical populations to promote health and function.

2. Design appropriate activity plans with assessments for evaluation of health, fitness and/or function.

3. Explain adaptations to physical activity to accommodate limitations for older age, disease and/or complex clinical treatment regimes.

4. Appraise how adherence to physical activity could be promoted in different clinical populations.

5. Interpret findings from epidemiological and longitudinal research studies to understand risk factors and associated rates of morbidity and mortality

  1. Credit level 6. Higher level module usually taken in Stage 3 of an undergraduate degree.
