What should we do with our research data once we've collected it? Depending on what type of data collection method you’ve used, you’ll then need to analyse it using either qualitative or quantitative data. You’ll find out how to analyse qualitative datasets using the code approach and the theme approach. You’ll learn simple statistical procedures used in the analysis of quantitative data that are critical to your development as a social researcher. You’ll discover methods for summarising and understanding large data sets and for drawing conclusions from uncertain and incomplete data. You’ll learn how basic probability and statistics can be used to reliably report and interpret statistical information. It will focus on best practices, limitations and potential pitfalls. At the end, you will understand why you might select a particular method of analysis depending on your research aims. You’ll also have practical skills for assisting with the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in your workplace using Excel.

2. Clean, analyse, manipulate, and analyse qualitative data. (Maps to S10 and S18 of the occupational standard).
3. Interpret research objectives and identify which quantitative and qualitative research methods are the most appropriate to meet objectives. (Maps to S1 of the occupational standard).
4. Interpret and derive insights from quantitative and qualitative research outputs. (Maps to S12 of the occupational standard).
