Overview

The module provides students without an undergraduate degree in psychology with a comprehensive overview of the main theoretical and empirical approaches in mental health practice. It will examine the origins and identification of different forms of atypical cognitions and behaviours and investigate the psychological and social impact for patients. The module will cover advanced material on some of the major mental health disorders, focusing on their social, cognitive, and biological underpinnings and the implications these have for treatment. In addition, the module will provide a critical evaluation of different approaches to assessment and intervention and ask fundamental questions about the meaning of normality.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the historical developments surrounding the classification of a range of psychological disorders and their treatment methods
2 Display systematic knowledge and understanding of the current diagnostic criteria for mental disorders and the links between symptoms and treatment approaches
3 Demonstrate integrative understanding and critical evaluation of the contributions made by the different approaches and research methods that are used in mental health practice
4 Comprehensively describe a broad range of interventions and treatments for mental disorders.
