Overview

What are the different approaches Clinical Psychologists use to reduce distress? How do we decide which approach to use? How can we tell how effective they are and for whom? This module will give you an understanding of how Clinical Psychologists work with clients in a stepped-care setting from brief psychological intervention to longer pieces of work. You will be introduced to a wide range of psychology intervention and therapeutic approaches and encouraged to think critically about when and how you would use them. Three key models we explore include cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy and systemic therapy. Other more specialist models of intervention will also be included.

Short Writing Piece. Assessment Details: 1000 words Articles for Different Audiences worth 20%.
Examination, 2 hours. This Assessment is Pass Compulsory.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1) Recognise and apply psychological theories relevant to mental health and well-being including cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and systemic orientations.
2) Locate and validate the centrality of the service user to all work conducted by a clinical psychologist.
3) Describe in a balanced and critical manner the issues raised in lectures, in outlining how theory and research can be used effectively in practice.
4) Present material with evidence of the use of relevant literature to support arguments.
5) Compare and contrast the roles of difference and diversity (gender, race, religion, age, ability, culture, class, education, ethnicity, social economic background, sexuality, spirituality) in clinical psychology and mental health

  1. Credit level 6. Higher level module usually taken in Stage 3 of an undergraduate degree.
