Overview

Ever wondered how Business Psychologists (sometimes called Organisational, Work or Occupational Psychologists) go about making the workplace a healthier, happier and more productive place for us all to be? Now is your chance to find out! This module focuses on the practical aspects of applying psychology to work and organisations, combining teaching of conceptual frameworks with opportunities to engage in evidence-based practice through case studies and lively class discussion. Expertise within the School of Psychology at Kent will be supplemented by speakers drawn from external organisations and businesses. Topics will include Organisational Culture, Commitment and Employee Engagement, Positive Leadership, the Ageing Workforce, and Coaching Psychology, amongst others. You will be encouraged to apply contemporary psychological concepts and methods to understand the application of psychology to core work and organisational issues and challenges. This module will take your knowledge beyond the theoretical, academic understanding of Business Psychology and into the world of a practising Business Psychologist, developing your skills and understanding of the application of this growing field.

Short Writing Piece. Assessment Details: Draft Scorecard Summary Presentation Slides worth 25%.
Extended writing. Assessment Details: 2500 words Final Scorecard Summary Presentation Slides worth 75%.

Reassessment Method: Single Instrument. 100% Written Assessment (2500 words)

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1) Appraise and evaluate the scientist-practitioner model, evidence-based practice, and the consultancy cycle.
2) Evaluate key contemporary concepts and emerging themes in Business Psychology.
3) Analyse and appraise current organisational needs, problems and priorities.
4) Apply and critically evaluate psychological theories to address key organisational needs.
