Overview

How do the growing industries of public relations, marketing and advertising influence today’s media landscape? What is the relationship between new media technology, consumer culture and promotional practices in our everyday lives? With a focus on critical analysis, creative practice and strategic thinking, you’ll develop a solid understanding of promotional media, examining their development in both historical and contemporary contexts. You’ll evaluate the key current forms of promotional media and critically discuss the economic, sociological and political impact of promotional activity. Alongside theoretical reflection and critical analysis, you’ll also build skills in audio-visual and digital content creation, using your knowledge about promotional media to develop your own strategic, innovative and ethical promotional practice.

Portfolio . Assessment Details: Complete a series of practical tasks worth 50%.
1500 words (or equivalent) Individual Project . Assessment Details: Design a mini promotional media project worth 50%.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 
Identify different types of promotional media practices, including their historical developments and current implications.
Recognise media strategies and issues related to influencing public opinion and consumer choices through critical analysis of key case studies, including the academic critiques of promotional media.
Investigate how certain promotional forms, styles and platforms make meaning and are used and interpreted by end users.
Assess how the development of new technologies and new media formats have shaped and transformed promotional media practices.
Apply acquired knowledge via practical engagement with tasks associated with promotional media practice.
