Overview

Applications of logical reasoning, problem-solving strategies, and documentation of solutions.
Introduction to mathematical resources for independent learning and research. Introduction to current subject developments. Attending 2 out 3 Undergraduate Mathematics Colloquia.
Introduction to the computer algebra system Maple: elementary programming, use as a tool for solution of algebraic equations, calculus and linear algebra.
Writing a CV and introduction to career development for mathematics graduates.

Method of assessment

Assessment 1: Short group project using Maple, requiring on average between 30 and 40 hours to complete 40%.
Assessment 2: Exercises requiring on average between 20 and 25 hours to complete. 30%.
Assessment 3: Career development exercise, requiring on average between 20 and 25 hours to complete 30%

Learning outcomes

The intended subject specific learning outcomes.
On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
1 demonstrate a reasonable level of skill in expository writing, presenting mathematical proofs and communicating solutions to mathematical problems;
2 apply problem-solving strategies to solve mathematical problems;
3 demonstrate a reasonable level of skill in comprehending mathematical texts and communicating their contents and using resources;
4 demonstrate skills in working with Maple to solve mathematical problems and use basic programming techniques;
5 write effectively for a non-specialist audience, for example via short project reports and/or CVs.


The intended generic learning outcomes.
On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
1 manage their own learning and make use of appropriate resources;
2 communicate straightforward arguments and conclusions reasonably accurately and clearly;
3 manage their time and use their organisational skills to plan and implement efficient and effective modes of working;
4 make competent use of technology skills such as online resources (Moodle), internet communication;
5 communicate and digest technical material competently;
6 demonstrate the acquisition of the study skills needed for continuing professional development;
7 work as part of a team.
