Overview

I want more wages.’ ‘I need more time with my family.’ ‘My firm has a contract to build but need to organise supplies for the project.’ All these statements may need a discussion of how, why and what the changes need to be so that it is mutually beneficial to both parties. This will most likely involve you having to negotiate the terms to receive more money or extend or shorten contact hours or discuss terms with prospective suppliers. Moreover, you may need to solve a dispute with a neighbour – all require negotiating skills.
This module will equip you with the necessary skills to conduct a negotiation. You will receive an introduction to the concepts of different types of negotiation and the skills required to becoming a successful negotiator. The module will provide you the confidence to negotiate unseen scenarios, to approach the negotiation with understanding and awareness, flexibility and creativity resulting in a hopefully successful collaboration through advocacy, listening and persuasion.
This module is part of Kent Law School’s co-curricular lawyering skills programme which aims to provide you with an introduction to various and important transferrable communication skills that you will find useful in any career you choose to pursue.
