Overview

The Languages Lab Project 1 is the first module in a series designed to equip you with the tools and skills needed to explore the intricacies of a language of your choice. As the foundation for the subsequent Languages Lab Project 2 and later modules in stages 2 and 3, in this module you will embark on a personalised language project tailored to your interests and aspirations. Through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and guided exploration, you will develop an understanding of language acquisition and cross-cultural communication. Whether building new skills or enhancing existing ones, you will make progress in your chosen language(s), preparing for future studies in the next stages. This module fosters independent language learning, empowering you to take ownership of your academic journey. Additionally, by engaging in Language Lab tutorials, you will gain valuable insights and receive guidance to make informed decisions about your language choices for stages 2 and 3.

Method of assessment

Main assessment methods:
Language Skills. Assessment Details: Timed assessment with a variety of short written tasks (1000-word equivalent, 40 minutes) (60%).
The Language Project . Assessment Details: One from: presentation with slides, screencast, or presentation with vocabulary poster (40%).

Reassessment Method: Single instrument100% written assessment (1500 words)

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1. Understand the principles underpinning language and intercultural communication learning, encompassing various theoretical frameworks and pedagogical approaches.
2. Make informed decisions when identifying and adapting own language learning strategies.
3. Engage in intercultural exploration and study, employing structured arguments and effective presentation methods to convey intercultural and linguistic insights effectively.
4. Undertake structured and managed language training, demonstrating the capacity to further develop linguistic skills.

Notes

  1. Credit level 4. Certificate level module usually taken in the first stage of an undergraduate degree.
  2. ECTS credits are recognised throughout the EU and allow you to transfer credit easily from one university to another.
  3. The named convenor is the convenor for the current academic session.
