Overview

This is a work placement-based module based in the newsroom of KMTV, an Ofcom-licensed Local Television Network channel based on the University’s Medway campus. No previous experience or media training is expected or required – the course is designed as an entry point to a media career.

You will start in the Autumn with workshops to help you develop key skills including how news stories are selected, developed and treated; how to shoot broadcast quality interviews and footage; video editing; script-writing and voiceovers.

At the same time, you will work alongside full-time professional journalists in the KMTV newsroom to put those skills into practice. Mentors in the newsroom will help you grow your confidence as you work regular shifts as a video journalist to gain first hand experience of reporting and building a valuable showreel of high quality work to show future employers. You will also put into practice the principles learned in your media law and ethics module, ensuring your stories are accurate, balanced and fair.

This module will also support you to take separate professional exams set by the National Council for the Training of Journalists as part of its Level 5 Diploma in Journalism.
