Overview

Design is powerful; it influences user interactions, emotions, and perceptions across various platforms from digital interfaces to physical spaces. How can you adapt your existing set of skills to connect with all the senses on a very large-scale, building environments to evoke emotions and tell stories?

Experiential graphic design is a multidisciplinary approach to building an environment contributing to how people perceive and interact with a space. In this module you will learn where design and human experience intersect, broadening your application of design principles beyond small screens and A4 paper. You’ll engage in projects and case studies challenging you to conceptualise and execute super-sized designs that work in spatial environments.

By the end of the module, you’ll have an understanding of how experiential graphic design gives purpose to built environments and creates meaningful interactions with the people who pass through and inhabit them.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to:?
1. Identify Experiential Graphic Design principles and apply them to create engaging and immersive design solutions across various platforms, including digital interfaces and physical spaces. (A5, B2)
2. Analyse and research user-centred design approaches, and critically assess user behaviours and needs.
3. Integrate these insights into a design process to create large scale experiences which communicate meaningfully with a target audience. (A2, A7)
4. Apply a relevant mix of analogue and digital tools to develop and test prototypes. Iterate and critically assess and refine a design response appropriate to a brief and list of defined objectives. (A5)
5. Debate and articulate a design response in collaboration with peers and stakeholders. (C2)
