Overview

How do companies measure, assess and communicate their financial performance? Managers prepare, read, and interpret financial information daily and they use it to communicate company financial results to a variety of stakeholders. In this module you will learn how sole traders and limited companies record accounting transactions using bookkeeping and how they summarise and report their financial results to external stakeholders using financial statements. You will also acquire knowledge about the regulatory framework of financial reporting which guides the process of preparation of the annual reports for a variety of companies. You will develop the analytical skills needed to both prepare and analyse financial statements. This will enable you to holistically assess company financial performance and provide recommendations.

Online test (45 minutes) worth 20%.
Individual Report (3000 words) worth 80%.

Reassessment Method: 100% Written Assessment (Report - 3000 words)

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

Describe how financial accounting systems and business activities for a variety of organisations are related.
Describe how financial reporting provides useful information to decision makers and outline its limitations.
Prepare financial statements to report company performance of sole traders and limited companies
Examine a set of financial statements to assess company performance using a variety of techniques of analysis and articulate the limitations of those techniques.

  1. Credit level 4. Certificate level module usually taken in the first stage of an undergraduate degree.
