You cannot be part of contemporary society without being affected by the stream of ads and images of all kinds, in various media; the texts and messages on the computer and TV screen, or in books and magazines; or not be caught up in the network of communications, whether face to face, on Facebook or by email, that are going on all the time. All this is both 'modern' and 'cultural' - and it is something we all do, cope with, and make sense of. Cultural Studies is the reflexive dimension of all this - taking it up in a more theoretical, analytical and critical way, putting it in a broader context, and evaluating its impact on the way we experience our lives and organise and govern our societies.
Kent is renowned for its research in cultural criminology, to the extent that Canterbury is deemed the capital for this field of criminology.
