Excellence in diversity Global in reach

For the past forty years I have principally (but not entirely) been employed in the University Sector. There I have experienced (but hardly enjoyed) administrative experience in the Universities of Glasgow, London (Queen Mary) and Kent. My teaching experience has been more fulfilling and ranged broadly over environmental topics ranging from fish parasitology to wildlife conservation. I have particularly enjoyed field-based practical studies with undergraduate, postgraduate and mature students. This work has taken me to France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, India, USA, Peru, and the Caribbean, and still continues.
My research has equally meandered. Peer-reviewed publications have ranged from human cutaneous myisasis, ecology of fish parasites, energetics in host-parasite systems, pathophysiology of rodent helminths, enzyme modification in fish tapeworms and determinants of aquatic biodiversity. During this work, secondment to a number of laboratories in Europe, the USA and UK has helped me acquire skills and conceptual insights into pathology, ecology, physiology and wildlife conservation. Recent research has involved biodiversity mapping in the Dover Strait and assessments of fish diversity in the Peruvian Amazon.
My links with the School extend back to the merger of DICE with the Department of Anthropology. Prior to that date (and since the formation of DICE in 1992) I held the position of Executive Director DICE, where I had managed the development of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees and the initial funding basis and staffing structure of DICE within the University.
Following the merger, I was appointed as Senior Lecturer, with responsibility for developing the Undergraduate degrees in Biodiversity Conservation. At the same time, I became involved in bidding for (and subsequently managing) the INTERREG (EU) research projects (Biomar and CHARM) in conjunction with colleagues in France.
Since 2002, I have enjoyed (immensely) being involved with the DICE Amazon research Expeditions to Peru. Which also continue.
