"ASHWATER, a parish in the hundred of BLACK-TORRINGTON, county of DEVON, 6 miles (S.E. by S.) from Holsworthy, containing 774 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £26. 6. 8. The  Rev. T. Melhuish was patron in 1823. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, contains some interesting monuments. Fairs for cattle are held here on the first Tuesday in May, and the first Monday after the lst of August. Family 1: Richard and Elizabeth Found

Richard marries Elizabeth Found in Ashwater in 1789. I am uncertain of Richard's provenance

1. the suggestion that he may be the son of Richard and Elizabeth Worden born in 1762 in Boyton is probably wrong as Richard 1762 dies in 1801 in Boyton, unmarried.
2. the groom is described as a widower of Wolborough. This may be Richard 1757, the son of John and Grace Wells who married Mary Smetham in Bodmin in 1785 but whose twin girls, Susanna and Jemima, are born in Marhamchurch but die very quickly. Perhaps Mary also dies?...A heartbroken Richard (from a wandering family) disappears to the other side of the moor. Very romantic and very speculative
3. he is Richard Ugler in some places - this raises the possibility that he is from the Exeter Uglers, perhaps William and Agnes but all this has to commend it is the spelling, it's the period that William and Agnes were raising the family and the geography - Broadclyst and Exeter are nearer to Wolborough! But there's no sign of any link to those Exeter families in the 19th century...

There is an Elizabeth born to Mary Found in Ashwater in 1766. The family move to Denbury, south of Newton Abbot in the mid-1790s as Philip is born there in 1796. Richard is a farm worker.

• daughter Elizabeth 1791 - it is likely that she marries Thomas Cload (1785-1852) in Totnes in 1817 - he may be the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cload of Totnes. In 1841, they are living in The Street, Totnes - Thomas is described as a hair dresser. There are lots of children! In 1851, they are still in Totnes in the Ashburton Road. Thomas dies in 1852 but Eliza carries on: in 1861 she is still in the Ashburotn Road with her son and in 1871, she is living there with her two unmarried daughters. Eliza dies in 1871 in Totnes.

Miscellaneous

• Philippa Jane (Mrs) 1841 marries Emmanuel Metherell in the village. She is the widow of John Jolliffe 1838 who marries Philippa about 1861. Philippa was born Philippa Jane Symons in 1842 in North Tamerton. In 1871 John Jolliffe 1838 is a farmer of 90 acres in Warbstow (source: 1871 census). See Family 5 in Warbstow. He dies in 1872 on the day of his mother's funeral and is buried in Jacobstow. Philippa Jane marries Emmanuel Metherell in 1875 - he is 16 years older than her, born in the village in 1825 and it is his second marriage as well. He dies in 1904 at Higher Kents, Jacobstow.
