Hailed as a ‘partnership of hope’, Kent has come together with KIMS Hospital to launch a new service for people living with a neurological condition.
The service, called Neurowell, addresses significant gaps in care for people living with long-term neurological conditions, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, insomnia and functional neurological disorder.
Although approximately 1 in 6 people in the UK live with a neurological condition, access to coordinated, ongoing support is challenging. Neurowell was founded to meet this need, offering a joined-up, person-centred approach that supports physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing.
Based at KIMS’ Sevenoaks Centre, the new service provides under one roof:
- Specialist clinical expertise
- Evidence-based therapies
- Technology-enabled interventions
The service focuses on improving mobility, mental health, cognition and sleep by integrating conventional therapies with cutting-edge technologies such as non-invasive brain stimulation and physiological measurement of the sleep-wake cycle.
KIMS Hospital, near Maidstone in Kent, celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year and is regarded as a pioneer of medical care in the South East of England. The University is home to the Parkinson’s Centre for Integrated Therapy which last year won a Parliamentary Global Health Award for its outstanding support for people living in the community with a brain condition.
Professor David Wilkinson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health & Strategic Partnerships) at the University of Kent and Director of Neurowell, said: ‘Our aim is to help people with neurological conditions live as well as possible. This service brings together clinical expertise, research and innovation in a way that is accessible and person-focused.’
Ms Prema Subaskaran, Executive Chairperson of KIMS Hospital and Honorary Patron of the new centre, said: ‘I am delighted that KIMS will partner with Neurowell. This new partnership provides a fantastic opportunity for KIMS to reach further outside the hospital into the community to support people with long-term long health challenges.’
The Neurowell service will operate at KIMS Sevenoaks Centre every week. For more information, please see www.neurowell.uk
