Overview

Pursuing a career in the arts not only requires creativity and talent but also a secure understanding of how the arts sector operates. In this module you will be introduced to the current state of affairs in the UK creative industries, and the various career paths that exist within the sector for arts graduates.
Tasks and exercises will enable you to develop a number of both practical and critical skills, ranging from writing CVs and funding applications, to managing your professional portfolio and using social media and networking to boost your career prospects and promote your work.
The module will also help you to consider and reflect upon which types of creative careers align with your own personal ambitions, and to develop an understanding of how to strategically approach your chosen route of professional practice.

Method of assessment

Main Assessment Methods:
Presentation.
Assessment Details: Career presentation (10 minutes). Worth 30%.

Portfolio.
Assessment Details: Career portfolio including, CV, Personal statement (2,000 words). Worth 70%.

Reassessment Method:
Like-for-like Presentation element to be submitted as an audio/visual recording.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 

1. Identify a range of different careers that exist within the creative industries.
2. Critically analyse the social, cultural, and economic factors that impact upon operations, professional practice, and entrepreneurship within the arts and creative industries.
3. Select and discuss ways in which to approach and pursue creative industries careers.
4. Apply knowledge and skills of career planning to careers research and a pre-professional career portfolio.

  1. Credit level 5. Intermediate level module usually taken in Stage 2 of an undergraduate degree.
  2. ECTS credits are recognised throughout the EU and allow you to transfer credit easily from one university to another.
  3. The named convenor is the convenor for the current academic session.
