Time Team

The Time Team project is investigating the history of the University of Kent from its inception through to the present day. It focuses on the key events that stand out in the University’s history, but will also illuminate less well-known elements of the institution’s past.

By gathering first-hand accounts, photographs, stories, articles and more from staff, students, alumni and the University of Kent Archive, the Time Team project aims to produce a timeline showcasing the most important events in the university’s history.

Why this project is important

As the University of Kent reaches the landmark of its 50th Anniversary it becomes more important than ever to document its past, so that the events and experiences of the many people involved in the University that have made it what it is today are neither forgotten nor lost. Whilst the other Anniversary history projects focus in detail on specific elements of the University’s history, the Time Team project aims to create a visual representation of the whole of the University’s past, thus providing an important overview on a single timeline, providing an easily accessible starting point for anyone interested in the history of the University.

Why we are interested in this project

As history students at the University, the volunteers on the Time Team project are particularly excited about their involvement in the project and the opportunity it provides to put the skills they are learning through their degree studies into practise. Over the course of the project they will be improving their skills in researching, archiving, interviewing and recording amongst many others. Furthermore, they will also have the unique opportunity to create a visual representation of the University’s history, which will hopefully be preserved and used long into the future, making this project particularly worthwhile and exciting by adding to the history of the University. The Time Team project is an opportunity to make sure that none of the University’s history is forgotten, by providing a starting point for research that will hopefully be used for many years to come.
