Goldstein Cycle Rides

Two inspiring cycling challenges took place in September 2015, both in honour of Professor Laurence Goldstein (former Head of the School for European Culture and Languages).

Canterbury - Sandwich - Canterbury

Staff, students and the local community took part in a 50km cycle ride on routes from the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus out to Sandwich and back, along quiet country roads through East Kent. A support vehicle provided any needed mechanical assistance on the day. At Sandwich, the riders had a rest stop along the Quay before heading back to Canterbury, where they could then join the BBQ and events of the 50th Festival.

Paris to Canterbury

The 50th anniversary Goldstein Cycle Rides included an innovative and exciting Trans-Campus E-Cycle Ride (a project championed by Professor Goldstein) which brought together staff, students and alumni from across the University as they cycled from our Paris centre to the Canterbury campus. The ride took four days, and on the final day riders pedalled back from Dover to Canterbury, arriving on the Saturday of the 50th Festival. The performance of cyclists was monitored throughout, with the live data streamed over the internet highlighting the scientific, electronics and sport science expertise of our university.

Downlands Cycles supported the ride by offering 50 year celebration cycles built to order. The bike had a super specification with lightweight aluminium frame, carbon forks, 20 speed Shimano gears, and costed around £1000.
