Conservation in Kent

As a county, Kent plays an important role in conservation, containing a diverse range of species and habitats. The University is also home to the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) and offers highly regarded degrees in several conservation subjects. As part of its 50th anniversary year, the University encouraged and developed these conservation links within the county through three signature events.

My Wild Kent” Photographic Competition was organised by DICE to celebrate Kent’s green spaces and its diverse array of wild plants and animals. Participants were encouraged to show what they loved most about nature in Kent, and prizes included money, Wildwood Photo Days, and free entry passes to Wildwood.

A Conservation in Kent workshop took place on 11 September 2015, and was attended by delegates from various environmental and conservation groups, as well as local councils. Participating organisations included the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, National Trust, Kent Downs AONB, the Forestry Commission, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

DICE also ran a conference entitled ‘The Future of Conservation in Kent’. Speakers included University of Kent staff and individuals from several organisations such as Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Kent Nature Partnership, Natural England and Kent Wildlife Trust.
