The University of Kent at Medway (UKM), based at Mid Kent College, welcomes its first undergraduates.
Establishment of new Centre for Sports Studies, at UKM.
Keynes College extension completed, including a new 360-seat lecture theatre.
The Lumley Building (formerly Drama) extension completed. |
2002 |
Kent is awarded £4m grant
from Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)
to signal the go-ahead for innovative partnership between
Kent and Greenwich University, in association with Mid-Kent College.
Queen and Duke of Edinburgh inaugurate the joint Medway campus
during visit to Chatham Maritime.
Completion of new building for SSPSSR (School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Research). |

2003 |
Expansion to include a campus at Medway and centres in Tonbridge and Brussels encouraged the University to change its name to the University of Kent. This change officially took place on 1st April 2003.
Canterbury Business School becomes Kent Business School.
Sports Centre opens after £1.5 million refurbishment and extension project. |
2004 |
Launch of the Reseau Universitaire Transmanche, the first Franco-British Higher Education institution; a joint venture between the University of Kent and four French Universities.
Launch of the Medway School of Pharmacy at Chatham Maritime, a joint project for the universities of Kent and Greenwich.
New £1 million Research Centre for the study of Law, Gender and Sexuality.
Tyler Court B and C student residences are opened.
The University Medical Centre and Pharmacy moves to new purpose-built premises. |
2005 |
The first students are welcomed to the new UKM campus at Chatham Maritime, and Kent’s first buildings at the new Medway campus are completed:
- The Medway Building, housing academic administration and teaching facilities.
- The Drill Hall Library, a learning resources centre.
Establishment of new Centre for Music Technology, at UKM
Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA) established.
School of Physical Sciences moves to the Ingram Building (formerly Chemistry), Kent Law School moves to Eliot College Extension.
Refurbishment of the Marlowe Building (formerly Physics) to house the Department of Anthropology and the new Kent School of Architecture.
Launch of the Kent IT Clinic, to provide students with experience of consultancy whilst studying.
Opening of new Park Wood student residences.
Opening of extension to the Gulbenkian. |

The Pilkington Building, providing teaching facilities and student social space, opens at UKM.
The Gillingham Building, housing additional teaching and IT facilities, opens at UKM. |
2007 |
Professor Dame Julia M Goodfellow DBE, CBE, FMedSci, FInstP became the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University in September 2007
