This programme offers you the opportunity to develop your subject knowledge within the field of business and management, building your language and academic skills with dedicated modules in Management English.

Overview

It enables you to identify processes, procedures and practices for effective management; and to understand international business environments and global perspectives on business and management issues.

You develop critical thinking and analysis skills, as well as effective problem-solving and decision-making. You also learn to apply ideas to various situations via effective oral and written communication, including the preparation and presentation of business reports and how to conduct research into business and management issues.

You have the opportunity to develop your independent study and research skills through a combination of subject modules within Kent Business School. In addition, as part of your programme you have the opportunity to improve your English language competence through dedicated modules offered by Kent International Pathways via the Centre for English and World Languages.

Independent rankings

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, Kent were placed 25th (out of 101 institutions) in the UK for research intensity in business and management studies and 98% of our research was judged to be of international quality. The School’s environment was judged to be conducive to supporting the development of research of international excellence.

The School was also ranked 24th for its breadth and depth of research across the whole community of research active staff by the Association of Business Schools.

Course structure

The Pre-Master's is a modular course which runs for three terms, starting in September. The structure is uniquely designed in order to prepare you for postgraduate study in your chosen field. You take modules in English for Specific Academic Purposes and then choose a number of modules from your chosen academic specialism.

The course structure below gives a flavour of the modules that will be available to you and provides details of the content of this programme. This listing is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation. The programme will require you to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. You may also have the option to take ‘wild’ modules from other programmes offered by the University in order that you may customise your programme and explore other subject areas of interest to you or that may further enhance your employability.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment is through a combination of assignments, coursework and examinations.

Programme aims

The programme aims to:

  • develop students’ knowledge and understanding of organisations, the external context in which they operate and how they are managed.
  • raise the level of spoken and written management English to that required for potential entry to a Master’s level programme in the area of Business and Management 
  • develop an understanding of the international environment in which organisations operate and an international perspective on business and management issues.
  • develop an appropriate range of cognitive, critical and intellectual skills, research skills and relevant personal and interpersonal skills.

  • organisations, the external environment in which they operate and how they are managed.
  • the effects of external environment at local, national and international levels upon the behaviour and management of organisations.

  • effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, using a range of media which are widely used in business such as the preparation and presentation of business reports.
  • conduct research into business and management issues.

You gain the following transferrable skills:

  • spoken and written English appropriate to the study of Business and Management.
  • effective self-management in terms of time, planning and behaviour, motivation, self-starting, individual initiative and enterprise.

Careers

Students progress to studying at Master’s level in the areas of business and management.

Professional recognition

Kent Business School is a member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Business Schools (ABS).

Entry requirements

Home/EU students

Equivalent of an honours degree from a UK or other approved university in a related subject, or an equivalent professional qualification.

Consideration will be given to applicants holding equivalent qualifications or work experience.

English Language requirement: IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each section.

Although there are no specific requirements for entry to this programme, all entrants are expected to meet the University of Kent's General entry requirements, including those which relate to English language-speaking abilties.

The Government has announced changes to allow undergraduate tuition fees to rise in line with inflation from 2017/18.

The University of Kent is currently considering whether to increase its regulated full-time tuition fees for all returning Home and EU undergraduates from £9,000 to £9,250 in September 2017. This would be subject to us satisfying the Government's Teaching Excellence Framework and the access regulator's requirements. The equivalent part-time fees for these courses might also rise by 2.8%.
