Centre for Philanthropy

A leading centre of philanthropy research, teaching and public engagement

The Centre for Philanthropy is a leading centre of philanthropy research, teaching and public engagement.

Research

We conduct robust and relevant research, in partnership with charity sector partners on a range of topics, including fundraising, major donors, giving circles, giving across the life course, corporate philanthropy, and philanthropy’s relationship with social justice.

Our expertise makes us a regular source of comment and analysis for the media in Britain and beyond, and we are always keen to explore new opportunities to share our work with diverse audiences. We also regularly speak to local, national and international charities to explore ways in which our research can inform their work and in turn how their experience can guide our future research.

The first decade: Read our report ‘10 Impactful Years‘ showcasing the highlights of our first decade from 2008 – 2018. Discover key findings from our flagship ‘Million Pound Donor Report’ and read brief outlines of the books we have written.

Public engagement

We see engagement with charities and infrastructure groups as central to our work. Since the formation of the Centre, we have worked with a wide range of organisations, and we are always keen to hear from charities who wish to discuss their work and our research. Teaching

Our teaching is informed by our research. We use innovative methods to engage with both undergraduate and postgraduate students, many of whom work in the charity sector or have ambitions to do so.

Our MA in Philanthropic Studies is the UK’s first Master’s in Philanthropic Studies. It’s an innovative online course that builds on our expertise and teaching in civil society, fundraising, philanthropy, the third sector and volunteering (and is also available as a PCert or PDip)
