Linguistics Laboratory

Experimental research on language comprehension/perception and production, and linguistic theory

English Language and Linguistics (ELL) is a young, dynamic and growing research community at the University of Kent.

Members of the department specialise in applied, experimental and theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics and stylistics. In addition to English and its varieties, we work on French, German, Greek, Romani, Spanish, Korean and Russian.

The Linguistics Laboratory (LingLab) consists of members of ELL staff conducting experimental research on aspects of language comprehension/perception and production, and linguistic theory. Our current research focuses on speech production and perception, semantic/pragmatic processing, syntax, language acquisition, and cognitive stylistics.

Laboratory facilities are available to all staff and postgraduate students in the Department and the Lab is also open to undergraduates undertaking dissertations in their third year. ELL members also have access to a recording studio and a multimedia lab which can be used both for research and teaching. Facilities are available for experimental and quantitative research in acoustics, sociophonetics, and speech and language processing and acquisition.
