Translating Theatre: 'Foreignisation' on Stage Research Seminar
A European Theatre Research Network event

Translating Theatre: 'Foreignisation' on Stage is the first phase of Dr Margherita Laera's two-year AHRC-sponsored project Translation, Adaptation, Otherness: Foreignisation in Theatre Practice, which argues that translation has a key role to play in fostering equality in the performing arts. In order to make theatres attractive to, and representative of, a more diverse audience, the project proposes to further the debate on the ethics and politics of translation among academics and professionals. In particular, the project interrogates the notion of what translation scholar Lawrence Venuti calls 'foreignisation', a translation strategy designed to minimise the 'domesticating' effects implicit in translation by rejecting 'fluency', 'naturalness' or 'familiarity' as imperatives (Venuti 1995, 1998).

This two-hour research seminar is designed to share some findings from the first six months of the project with colleagues and students from the University. The first hour involves watching a 25-minute film about the project's practice-as-research workshops carried out in June and July 2016 and a discussion on the project's themes and methodologies. In the second hour, Dr Laera and her Associate Dr Pitrolo will host a 'foreignisation' workshop open to PG students and staff interested in translation and modern languages and cultures. Participants are encouraged to bring short sections of text in a language other than English for a collective exercise in 'foreignisation'. Fluent knowledge of a second language is not essential.
