Arriving in January: Transport and Parking

See below for information on how to travel to Medway campus if you are arriving in January 2019.

Travelling by car if you are living on campus

Move-in appointments
Please call Liberty Quays on +44 (0) 1634 853285 to arrange parking for unloading. Please note that your vehicle must be removed after.

Addresses for satellite navigation:

  • Liberty Quays student accommodation: Liberty Quays, Blake Avenue, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 1FL
  • Medway campus (for the Drill Hall car park): University of Kent, North Road, Chatham Maritime, Kent ME4 4AG

Directions to Medway campus

From London, the North and East Anglia (via M25 clockwise) and from the West and South-West (via M25 anticlockwise): Exit M25 at junction 2 signposted A2 Canterbury, where the A2 becomes the M2 at junction 1 leave the motorway and continue on the A2 signposted Gillingham. Follow the brown anchor signs for the Historic Dockyard and Chatham Maritime via the A289 and the Medway Tunnel. Take the first exit directly after emerging from the tunnel, turn right at the end of slip road, leading up Maritime Way towards Chatham. The campus entrance is the first exit at the next roundabout, signposted Pembroke and Universities at Medway.

From the South-East: Leave M2 at junction 4 signposted Gillingham. Follow the brown anchor signs for the Historic Dockyard and Chatham Maritime via the A278, A2 and A289. Take the last exit just before the Medway Tunnel, signposted Chatham and Historic Dockyard. At the end of the slip road, turn left up Maritime Way towards Chatham. The campus entrance is the first exit at the next roundabout, signposted Pembroke and Universities at Medway.

Travelling by public transport

We have excellent transport links within the local area.

Rail
The closest train stations are Chatham and Gillingham. Chatham is the most convenient for transport links to the campus. There are bus stops outside both of the stations. See National Rail journey planner.

Bus
Arriva is one of the main bus service providers in the Medway area. You can catch the 100, 190 or 191 services from Chatham rail station to campus. There are a number of bus stops on or near to the campus and we recommend you alight at the following bus stops:

  • St George’s Centre bus stop for the Pembroke or Dockyard campus, located next to the main gate to the campus on Dock Road.
  • New Kent Road bus stop (on campus) - for the Pembroke campus.
  • Dockyard- for the Historic Dockyard.
  • Milner Road- for student accommodation Liberty Quays.

Transport and parking at all other times

The University of Kent promotes itself as a Green University and aims to reduce single car occupancy as part of its Travel Plan. We have excellent transport links within the local area as well as to and from London and Europe.

Travel by car

Parking is very restricted at the Medway campus. Students residing at Liberty Quays or the following postcodes are not entitled to park on campus:

Accessible parking bays are available for those with restricted mobility.

Travel by Public Transport

The Universities at Medway work together with Arriva Bus Company to make student travel even more affordable. University of Kent students can purchase a substantially discounted bus pass or tickets.

The Arriva student bus ticket is valid 1 January 2019- 31 December 2019. The annual student bus ticket allows travel on all Arriva services in West Kent and East Sussex, not just within the Medway area. To take advantage of these fares you need to have your KentOne card. The annual student ticket can be bought online using the promotional code which can be accessed on our website once you have a University login. Travel by Bike

Liberty Living offers a cycle hire scheme for students living at Liberty Quays. There is plenty of cycle storage around the campus to lock up your bike. The Estates department also provide a free Dr Bike bicycle check-up on a monthly basis. Further information can be found here.

Travel between Medway and Canterbury

The University provides a free shuttle service between the Medway and Canterbury campuses. This service provides travel to University of Kent students and staff only and has a booking service to guarantee a seat. Click here for further information.
