Our short course programme allows you to spend time exploring a subject purely for interest among like-minded people, without formal assessment as well as offering an ideal starting point in gaining the confidence to join one of our part-time degree-level programmes.

Cunning Regal Women: English queens before Elizabeth I

The most famous iconic queen in our history is surely Elizabeth I but what of the women who came before her: Matilda, the daughter of Henry I, granddaughter of William the Conqueror; Eleanor of Aquitaine; Isabella of France; Margaret of Anjou and Mary Tudor – what historical legacy have they left in order that we can evaluate them in terms of their abilities as women to hold power, responsibility and rule?

George Orwell

Art History - 23 June 2018

Let’s Talk About Art

This study morning offers students a chance to familiarise themselves with a selection of art works starting in the Renaissance until Postmodern times. We will examine the conditions in which art was created, discussed and collected in conjunction with social, cultural, political and technological developments. In addition, students will explore some of the principal art historical approaches and methods in order to describe, analyse and evaluate art works. We will discuss selected artworks as a group in order to discover broader art historical developments.
