FAQs

Do I need a visa to attend the Summer School?

If you are not an EU resident and require a visa to travel to the Schengen area, you should apply for a short-term tourist visa from your nearest French consulate.  To support your application we are able provide you with confirmation of your place on the Summer School if you write to request such a document from summerschoolparis@kent.ac.uk

What is included in the fee? 

The teaching costs, course materials, free Wi-Fi on site, 2 weekly Paris travel cards to enable you to travel to and from the university, welcome refreshments, breakfasts (at the FIE), lunches during the week, group excursions and the final dinner are all included within the tuition fee.  If you have requested accommodation, the cost of this along with breakfast, will also be included within your fee.

What other costs might I incur whilst attending the Summer School?

You will be expected to pay for your travel to and from Paris, all evening meals (except for the final dinner), meals during the weekends and any additional sightseeing or travel that you wish to undertake.

Do I need to purchase any teaching materials?

Students have access to large array of online resources and all other resources are provided free of charge. Although students do not need to buy books for the programme, they may benefit from further reading. Once registered, students are given a reading list and are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these core texts in advance.

Do I need to speak another language?

All the teaching and excursions will be conducted in English so it is not a prerequisite that you speak French. If you do speak French, the summer school setting in Paris provides an excellent opportunity for you to speak and practise your French on the trips and the local community.

How many hours per day will I study?

The Summer School programme will be taught through a combination of academic and cultural sessions. Each academic session will last approximately 2 hours. The format will vary from lectures and presentations by academics and practitioners to Q&A sessions. Daily Cultural excursions relating to the lessons taught will take place in Paris and surrounding areas and will vary in duration depending on the activity.

What Assessments will I undertake?

Summer school students will be required to take part in a group presentation focusing on a specific subject that they have learnt about on the course and complimenting this with video or photographic evidence. Full details will be provided to successful applicants.
