What do you love or want to see changed at Kent? Make sure you fill out your survey so your voice is heard!

Completing one of the following surveys is one of the most powerful ways to make your voice heard at Kent and make a change.

Which survey should I take?

You will need to complete either the National Student Survey (mainly for final year undergraduate students) or the Undergraduate Survey. You don’t need to complete both. Read on to find out which survey you need to complete.

Final year students

The 2019 National Student Survey (NSS) is now closed. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Why should I take the survey?

Feedback from these surveys is reviewed by senior managers and used to make significant decisions that affect students at Kent. See below.

To make sure the feedback is representative we want as many students as possible to complete the surveys.

How your feedback makes a difference

Here are just some of the improvements we have made in response to student feedback:

Teaching and learning community

  • New teaching and learning spaces
    Over the last five years, we have invested £64.5m in teaching spaces. New spaces include: School of Economics and teaching block, Sibson Building, Wigoder Law Building, Templeman Library redevelopment, two new digital classrooms and the Sail and Colour Loft at Medway.
  • Free membership of your academic society
    You can join your academic society for free, if it is directly linked to your course.
  • Improved use of lecture capture
    A new lecture capture policy was developed with students and staff to make sure this helpful teaching tool is used more widely. As a result, student viewing times have increased threefold over the last two years.
  • Networks for teaching staff
    We have created a network for Directors of Education to share best practice and help enhance teaching on your course.
  • More staff development
    We have enhanced professional development opportunities for all teaching staff. Over the last four years, those with additional teaching qualifications have more than doubled. Many have also gained senior fellowships and won national awards for their teaching.

Learning opportunities

  • Even more study abroad opportunities
    Kent has expanded its range of study abroad opportunities with a network of over 190 universities across 39 countries.
  • Annual careers fair
    The careers fair gives you the opportunity to meet with hundreds of graduate employers offering not only jobs, but work experience and internships.
  • Year in Computing
    While studying at Kent you have the opportunity to develop your IT skills through our ‘Year in Computing’ course. If you don’t fancy Computing, there’s a range of Study Plus courses you can take alongside your main degree.
  • Improved access to Careers Advisers
    By better understanding your needs, we have been able to provide you with the relevant careers support in a timelier manner. Overall, reducing waiting times and giving you access to a Careers Adviser when you need them.
  • On-campus accommodation for students returning from a year abroad or in industry
    Students returning from a year abroad or in industry can apply to live on-campus when they return to Kent in their fourth year.
  • Award-winning careers service
    Our Careers and Employability Service is constantly listening to and acting on your feedback. This has helped them win Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service (AGCAS) and National Undergraduate Employability (NUE) awards for the past three years.

Assessment and feedback

  • Clear marking criteria in advance
    All marking criteria are in your module handbook so it’s easy to find and you know it in advance.
  • Standardised assessment and feedback
    Following feedback from almost 3,500 students, we worked with Kent Union to establish standardised assessment and feedback guidelines. View the Assessment and Feedback policy.
  • Timely feedback
    All assessments are now required to be marked and returned within three working weeks.

Academic support

  • Academic Advisers for all
    Progress Profiles have been introduced to help your Academic Adviser provide more individual advice and guidance when you need it.
  • Award-winning student support
    Listening to and working with students has helped us to win the THE award for Outstanding Student Support two years in a row.
  • Study skills embedded in your course
    The Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS) embeds study skills throughout the curriculum to help you get the study advice you need.
  • Academic Peer Mentoring
    Academic Peer Mentoring training sessions were developed so that students could gain recognition as a peer mentor on their degree (HEAR) transcript.
  • Book study support sessions online
    Our online booking system makes it easier for you to book one-to-one study advice and workshops.

Organisation and management

  • Campus Shuttle between Medway sites
    You can now board the improved Campus Shuttle from Liberty Quays to Pembroke and the Dockyard.
  • Mid-module evaluation
    Following student feedback, more staff are using mid-module evaluation forms so they can make changes before the module finishes.
  • Online module evaluation forms
    Module evaluations can now be completed online through Moodle. Making it easier for you to give your feedback!

Learning resources

  • 24/7 Library
    Following your feedback, the University opened the libraries 24/7 at Canterbury and Medway, during term-time.
  • More study spaces
    There have been over 400  additional study spaces created as part of the Templeman Library redevelopment. Offering even more silent, individual and group study options.
  • Investment in course-specific resources
    Over £4m* is spent annually on course-specific books, e-books, journals and e-resources. There are over one million books and journals and over 1.1m e-resources available. (*17/18 SCONUL)
  • Library redevelopment
    The Templeman Library redevelopment was designed with students. Requested features included more charging points and group work spaces.

Postgraduate student?

Student voice – how you can give your feedback

Other than the National Student Survey (NSS), there are many ways you can give your feedback while at Kent. You can tell us what you think by:

  • Talking to your Student Rep or using Digital Rep online. This year we have more Student Reps to help you!
  • Completing a module evaluation to provide feedback (in class or online)
  • Speaking to your Academic Adviser or other members of staff (either face to face or via email)
  • Posting to the University’s social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook etc.)
  • Completing other surveys you are sent throughout the year

A new group has been established to review core student surveys and ensure your feedback is being used to inform change. The group will also make sure you know about these changes through these webpages.
