School of Mathematics, Statistics & Actuarial Science

SMSAS is a long-established provider of teaching in Mathematics and Statistics, Financial Mathematics, and Actuarial Science, with a firmly established reputation for excellence in research.

Much of science is based upon the application of Mathematics. It provides the theoretical framework for physical sciences, for Statistics and data analysis, as well as for computer science. New discoveries within Mathematics affect our fundamental understanding of the world we live in, and the School's teaching and research reflect the diversity of Mathematics today.

Attempt, Attend, Achieve

In September 2016 the School introduced a new policy entitled Attempt, Attend, Achieve to ensure that all students have the opportunity to fully engage with their programme and achieve the very best that they can.

As part of this policy, all students are expected to:

  • Attempt all of their assignments including those that do not count towards their final marks
  • Attend at least 90% of their lectures and classes
  • Achieve at least 60% in all marked assignments.

We offer a range of single and joint honours degrees, postgraduate diploma programmes, Master's programmes and research programmes. Distinctive offerings include an option for students who wouldn't otherwise be eligible for degree level studies to take a Foundation Year, as well as a four year MMath programme.

We are strongly committed to student achievement and developing student creativity and employability, with Year in Industry placements offering solid work experience.

Equality, diversity, and inclusivity are at the heart of the SMSAS philosophy and the School is working towards Athena SWAN Silver status, having achieved a Bronze award in 2014.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 72% of the School's research output was assessed as International Quality or above. The School is in the top 25 in the UK when considered on weighted GPA.

Collaborative and interdisciplinary research are particular strengths and we have a very active seminar programme across all of the School's subject areas, involving a wide range of speakers.

The Centre for Actuarial Science, Risk and Investment (CASRI) is based within the School and is one of just three university providers of programmes in Actuarial Science that are accredited by the UK Actuarial Profession. The Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Royal Statistical Society are among the other institutions that recognise the rigour and relevance of our programmes.
