Postgraduate scholarships and funding

 

The University of Kent has a scholarship fund of over £9 million to support our taught and research students with their tuition fees and living costs.

University of Kent awards

Templeman Scholarship - exclusively for Kent graduates

  • Offers tuition fees for one year.
  • Open to full-time taught Master's applicants who are Kent graduates.

Alumni Postgraduate Research Scholarship - exclusively for Kent graduates

  • Offers home-rate tuition fees plus maintenance award (£14,057 for 2015-16)
  • Open to full-time doctoral applicants who are Kent alumni.

Graduate School Scholarshipe - exclusively for Kent graduates

  • £1,000 tuition fee reduction (£500 over two years for part-time students).
  • Open to 2016 Kent graduates who are registered at Kent by 1 October 2016 for a self-funded postgraduate degree programme.

Loyalty Discount - exclusively for Kent graduates

  • 10% discount on the first year of postgraduate tuition fees.
  • Open to alumni, siblings/children of alumni, husband and wife studying together for further degrees.

100 Vice Chancellor's Research Scholarships

  • PhD scholarships offered at the standard UK Research Councils rate (£14,057 for 2015-16).
  • Applicants must hold a first or 2i hons degree / Masters at merit or distinction and meet other criteria.
  • Applicants must be eligible to register no later than 1 October 2016.
  • Open to applicants from any country. Please note that overseas students must have the appropriate documentation to evidence eligibility to work in the UK. Further information can be found here.
  • The scholarships are administered under the Graduate Teaching Assistantship Scheme. See below.

50th Anniversary Scholarship - Humanities

  • Offered to new students who an start in January 2016 Faculty Competition
  • PhD scholarship offered at the standard UK Research Councils rate (£14,057 for 2015-16).
  • Applicants must hold a first or 2i hons degree / Masters at merit or distinction and meet other criteria.
  • Applicants must be eligible to register no later than midday on Tuesday 15 December 2015.
  • Open to applicants from any country. Please note that overseas students must have the appropriate documentation to evidence eligibility to work in the UK. Further information can be found here.
  • The scholarships are administered under the Graduate Teaching Assistantship Scheme. See below.

Christine and Ian Bolt Scholarship

  • Open to full-time Kent postgraduate students whose research material is located in the USA.
  • Offers up to £10,000 (to include tuition fees) for one year in support of a sustained period of research in the USA.

Medway Community Scholarships

  • £1,000 financial support, and advice, training and guidance to help you deliver your project
  • Recipients of other scholarships may still be eligible for a Medway community scholarship if they meet the award criteria.
  • Open to all applicants registered or due to register at Medway.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

  • Varies from a few hundred pounds to the standard UK Research Councils rate (£14,057 for 2015-16).
  • GTAs are employed to teach alongside their studies and must meet criteria specific to the academic school.
  • Open to applicants from any country subject to visa and residency requirements.

Santander Scholarships

  • Scholarships of £5,000 for a one year Master's degree.
  • Candidates must hold or expect to achieve a first or a 2:1 equivalent at Undergraduate Bachelor's degree level.
  • Open to nationals of one of the 11 countries of the Iberian and Latin American Santander Universities network.

European jointly supervised PhDs (Cotutelle) Scholarship

  • Open to full-time EU (non UK) applicants of University of Kent jointly supervised PhDs (Cotutelle).
  • Offers 50% off tuition fees at the Home/EU rate for one year.

Music Performance Scholarship (Music at Kent website)

  • Up to £5,000 pa which includes provision for instrumental/vocal tuition (up to £500 pa).
  • Applicants must meet a range of specified criteria.
  • Open to all new students from any country.

Sports Scholarships (Kent Sports website)

  • Financial support of between £250 - £5,000 pa, plus other benefits including free sports membership.
  • Applicants must be competitors of any sport at (at least) county level or equivalent and meet other criteria.
  • Open to applicants from any country.

Research Council awards

The UK Research Councils offer awards to UK candidates comprising tuition fees and a maintenance grant (£14,057 for the 2015-16 academic year).

 

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) (external link)

CHASE

Kent is part of the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) Doctoral Training Partnership, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). CHASE funds up to 75 doctoral studentships every year.

EU residents are eligible for tuition fee-only awards. Non-EU residents are not eligible to apply.

External awards

Australian Bicentennial Scholarships & Fellowships (external link)

  • One-off awards of up to £4,000 for UK postgraduate students or academic staff to undertake research/study in Australia.
  • Open to Australian postgraduate students and academic staff wishing to come to the UK.

British Federation of Women Graduates Postgraduate Awards

  • Open to eligible third-year female doctoral students resident in England, Wales or Scotland.
  • Awards are given out in September/October and usually range between £2,500 and £6,000.

Cumberland Lodge Scholarships (external link)

  • Six scholarships available for doctoral students studying at universities in the UK.
  • The Cumberland Lodge Scholarship is a two year programme designed to fit around studying.

Display Wizard Graphic Design Scholarship

  • £500 scholarship.
  • Open to students currently studying Art, Graphic Design,Visual Communication,Creative Advertising or Marketing.

FindAMasters.com and FindAPhD.com (external links)

  • Six scholarships available in total.
  • Awards for Master's and PhD study.

Money for Books Scholarship (external link)

  • Open to Home fee paying students
  • Offers £250 in the form of book vouchers

Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries (external link)

  • Open to students from anywhere in the world.
  • Offers bursaries of £500.

Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme

  • Open to eligible students from selected African and South American countries wishing to study specific Masters courses.
  • Offers tuition fees, travel costs, clothing, monthly stipend and baggage allowance.

The Wellcome Trust

  • Offers funding to support biomedical research and the medical humanities, with the aim of improving human and animal health.

International awards - from the University of Kent

International Scholarships for Taught Masters Students

  • Open to all overseas-fee paying applicants.
  • Offers £5000 towards tuition fees for one year of study.

Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship

  • Open to passport holders of the People’s Republic of China or permanent residents of Hong Kong.

Chancellor's Scholarship for Trinidad and Tobago

  • Open to those with a valid passport from Trinidad or Tobago.
  • £1,000 towards tuition fees for one year.

International Pathways Scholarships

  • One tuition fee scholarship for the Kent International Pathways Graduate Diploma (Pre master’s) programme.
  • Applicants must have firmly accepted a conditional offer for the Graduate Diploma programme and must submit an essay.
  • Open to overseas fee paying applicants from any country.

Santander Scholarship

  • Open to eligible students from Iberian or Latin American countries.
    £5,000 (for one year only) towards a full-time taught or research Master’s degree at the University of Kent.

University of Kent Loyalty Discount

  • Open to University of Kent alumni and children of alumni.
  • Offers a first-year tuition fee discount of 10%.

Other international postgraduate scholarships

Erasmus Mundus

  • Open to applicants from all over the world.
  • Offers scholarships for individuals wishing to study Erasmus Mundus Masters or Joint Doctorate programmes.

Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies

  • Open to applicants from countries in Groups B and C of the World Bank classification.
  • Offers studentships within the field of urban and regional studies.
