School of European Culture and Languages

SECL research

The School of European Culture and Languages brings together researchers who study social and cultural life across a wide range of historical and contemporary contexts. Across its six Departments, there are shared interests in Western and Eastern philosophy, literature and film, language, cultural and literary theory, cultural history, the study of modernity, embodiment and the medical humanities, and material culture.

Staff research funding support

Staff are able to claim up to £800 (£880 for early career researchers) each year for the costs of attending conferences at which they are presenting a paper. They are also able to submit bids to the School’s Strategic Research Fund to support collaborative initiatives, impact activities or to seed fund projects leading to further grant applications or major publications. Further details of these schemes and application forms are available in the Research section of the School’s Sharepoint page.
