The Department of Modern Languages offers a range of single honours undergraduate degree programmes in French, German, Hispanic Studies and Italian, as well as a suite of European Studies programmes. You may also combine your studies with another subject, as we offer a large choice of joint honours programmes. All our degree programmes include a Year Abroad between your second and final year, for you to become immersed in the culture and language that you are studying; this year is offered at a significantly reduced tuition fee.
You can study our modern language programmes whether you are a beginner, or have attained a GSCE or A Level in the language. We offer a wide range of modules to enable flexibility in your course, so you can tailor your study to your own interests.
By learning Italian, you provide yourself with the best possible instrument to explore the cultural riches that Italy has to offer and to open your eyes to the Roman heritage, the Renaissance and modern architecture, fashion and car design. Spoken not only in its home country, but also in Switzerland and by more than fifteen million Italians in North America and Australia, it is a hugely popular language all over the world.
