Undergraduate studies

The Department of Modern Languages offers a range of single honours undergraduate degree programmes in French, German, Hispanic Studies and Italian, as well as a suite of European Studies programmes. You may also combine your studies with another subject, as we offer a large choice of joint honours programmes. All our degree programmes include a Year Abroad between your second and final year, for you to become immersed in the culture and language that you are studying; this year is offered at a significantly reduced tuition fee.

You can study our modern language programmes whether you are a beginner, or have attained a GSCE or A Level in the language. We offer a wide range of modules to enable flexibility in your course, so you can tailor your study to your own interests.

German is a language of great cultural and commercial importance. Within Europe, it is spoken by more people than English or French. A fluent command of German, combined with knowledge of the cultural development of the German-speaking world, is a prerequisite to career opportunities in many parts of the continent.
