Dr Matthijs Wibier

Dr Matthijs Wibier joined the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies in 2018 as a Lecturer in Ancient History specialising in Roman history. 

After receiving a BA and MA from the University of Leiden and a PhD in Classics from the University of St Andrews, Matthijs taught at Penn State University in the USA for two years and was an ERC postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pavia (project Redhis) for three years. He also held a fellowship in papyrology at Princeton University in the summer of 2014. His experience and leadership in academic education have been recognised with a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Matthijs' research interests lie in the intellectual culture and literature of the Roman Empire, including Late Antiquity. Matthijs is fascinated by how texts and information circulated, both in terms of intellectual traditions and in terms of the materiality of texts. He has worked mostly on Roman legal culture and literature, but his interests span ancient scholarship and philosophy, reading culture and education, Latin and Greek prose, papyrology, and textual criticism. 

His current projects include the completion of a monograph on Roman legal scholarship in the Early Empire and a large collaborative volume (based on the ERC project) that traces the circulation, use, and reception of Roman legal literature in Late Antiquity.

Matthijs is a member of the Centre for Late Antique Archaeology, the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, as well as the 'Ancient History and Archaeology of Egypt' research cluster in the department of CLAS.

Matthijs teaches ancient history and Latin and welcomes applications for doctoral study from suitably qualified students with interests in any of his research areas.
