Criteria
The call is open to candidates interested in pursuing a PhD programme at the University of Kent on a project linked to the Signature Research Theme ‘Future Human’. The full title of this project is: Enhancing exercise outcomes using immersive virtual reality and machine learning interventions. It is Led by Dr Lucy Hale in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences in collaboration with Professor Markus Bindemann in the School of Psychology and Dr Giovanni Masala & Dr Dominique Chu in the School of Computing. We particularly welcome applications from but not limited to Sport and Exercise Science (or related subjects) graduates. Knowledge or an interest in advanced data analysis, immersive technologies, and computer or data science would be advantageous.
Further details
The aim of this PhD programme is to optimise the use of immersive technologies (e.g., virtual reality) in supporting exercise interventions in healthy and clinical populations. It will explore aspects such as the most effective exercises, how immersive environments can be optimised, the acute and long-term effect of immersive exercise interventions, and how data analysis can be harnessed to individually optimise the exercise. On project completion, the student will have gained a breadth of knowledge surrounding novel exercise interventions, capable of improving health/ fitness/ performance and they will have gained a deep expertise in the applied machine learning and data science.
The PhD project will be part of the Future Human Signature Research Theme. The Future Human Theme brings together a vibrant interdisciplinary community of researchers from across the university to explore the use of science and technology for restoration and/or enhancement of human function.
