Kent Counts: Q-Step at Kent

Who?
Q-Step at the University of Kent spans the Schools of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Science Research (SSPSSR); Politics and International Relations, Kent Law School and Kent Business School. Led by Dr. Baumberg and Dr. Sundberg in SSPSSR, it is the only Q-Step Centre outside London in the South East. The University has matched over £1m of external funding with an investment of over £1m itself.

What?
The Kent Q-Step Centre tackles the perceived difficulty and irrelevance of statistics head on. Through inspiring, innovative, and integrating teaching we show how quantitative skills provide new insights into all our lives, and how using numbers is simply one of the tools in a social scientist’s toolbox. Using data on key questions in social science we build statistical skills from the most accessible to the most advanced.

How?
This vision involves different programmes with different levels of quantitative content.

It also entails a major IT upgrade, so that students can use a laptop computer to do their statistical analyses from any room on campus (or beyond). We will provide research and work placement opportunities, and provide a quantitative support service operated by staff and PhD students support both in-class teaching and statistical research projects.
