Criticality and brain dynamics, can physics help understand the brain?

Speaker: Dr Paul Expert and Prof Federico Turkheimer
Date/Time: Wednesday 7 November 2012, 4.15pm
Location: Computing COLT3

Abstract

The idea that the brain is in a critical state, in the statistical mechanics sense of the term, has been introduced in the late 90's (see Chialvo for example). The rational behind that analogy is to see the brain as a set of interacting units that give rise to non-trivial emergent phenomena. In this talk, we will try to introduce the mains ideas behind that analogy and then present results from fMRI data analysis and neuronal activity measurements that support it.
