Academic career

A graduate of the University of Kent, Denise qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers and Lybrand (now PwC) in 1982. She then spent a further 5 years in the accountancy profession, working in both national and local firms in a General Practice role, advising small and medium sized businesses. Denise moved into the University sector and became the first internal auditor at Cranfield University, Bedford, in 1989. After a few months, Denise was appointed Financial Controller, a post she held for 5 years before moving to Kent.

Denise is a member of the board of Canterbury for Business.

In 1995, Denise was appointed Director of Finance at the University of Kent and has since taken on a broader range of responsibilities since becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2008. Areas of responsibility include Commercial Services, Information Services, Projects and Business Improvement, Human Resources, Estates, Safety, Health and the Environment and Legal Services.

Denise is also the Equality and Diversity champion for age.
