Busy clearing day for University of Kent

The University of Kent today had very few degree places left after filling the majority of its remaining 250 places on the first day of clearing.

The University, which had benefitted during the year from a rise in applications that was more than double the national average, received around 4,000 enquiries on A level results day, resulting in 2,000 late applications for its remaining places.

In keeping with the national picture, Kent’s clearing hotline was busy throughout the day as would-be students still looking for a degree tried to find a suitable place.

Steven Holdcroft, the University’s Head of Information, Recruitment and Admissions, said: ‘As expected, nationally we saw a situation where demand for university places far exceeded supply. This meant many institutions were in a similar situation to Kent in having very few or no places available.

‘Our success here at Kent in securing extra student numbers from HEFCE late in the applications cycle meant we could fill around 250 extra places during the day. The high demand and competition for places ensured we recruited suitably well-qualified students.’

Applications to Kent during 2010 were 25% up on last year, compared to a 12% rise nationally.

‘We have a very few places left in Maths, Pharmacy and Economics, so it is worth still contacting us though,’ added Steven.

The University’s clearing hotline number is 0845 2000 166 or +44 (0) 1227 827272. Prospective students can also check out the latest vacancy information and even apply on-line via the dedicated clearing website: www.kent.ac.uk/clearing/
