The answer is now revealed to the Christmas puzzle set by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS), the first in a new series of brain teasers from the School.
The Thrifty Merchant, a new puzzle from SMSAS, featured the character Shylock, iron weights and rare spices by the gram.
Set to challenge and entertain in equal measure it follows the School’s popular contribution to BBC Radio 4’s Puzzles for Today.
The puzzle was set before the Christmas holidays and the answer is now revealed here and at @UniKent .
Professor Peter Hydon, Head of SMSAS, said: ‘I hope the puzzle entertained people of all ages, encouraging them to use maths, their thinking skills and logic to come up with the right answer.’
