An expert on political violence, mediation and rebuilding institutions after violence will give the University’s 2018 John Burton lecture on Thursday 15 November 2018 at 18.00.

Professor Marie-Joëlle Zahar, from the University of Montreal, is a senior fellow of the International Peace Institute (IPI) and has worked across the world including Syria, Lebanon and the Balkans. From 2013-2015 she served as Senior Expert on Power Sharing on the standby team of mediation experts at the UN Department of Political Affairs.

The free talk entitled ‘The (in)efficiency of mediation in contemporary conflicts: A Question of design?’ will take place in the Grimond Lecture Theatre 2 on the University’s Canterbury campus and will be followed by a drinks reception. There is free parking on campus from 17.00.

The John Burton Lecture Series is the flagship event of the Conflict Analysis Research Centre (CARC) at the University of Kent. The annual lecture commemorates the late John Burton, a former member of CARC who played a pivotal role in the development of peace and conflict studies in the UK.

The lecture series aims to engage a wide audience with a major theme in conflict analysis through inviting leading global figures in the field of conflict analysis including academics, practitioners, and journalists to speak about their work.

For staff and students, the lecture will be live streamed and you may watch by logging into your University account.
