As part of a series of free lectures on international legal issues in the news, Professor Nick Grief will speak about his legal case against the nine nuclear powers.

Professor Nick Grief, Dean of Medway, who is an expert on public international law, especially the legal status of nuclear weapons, is the speaker at the second of a series of free lectures hosted by the Centre for Critical International Law (CeCIL) at the University’s Kent Law School.

RMI, a tiny state in the Pacific Ocean, lodged applications in the International Court of Justice against each of the nine nuclear-armed states, accusing them of ‘violating international law by failing to pursue in good faith and conclude negotiations for the worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons.’

Professor Grief’s lecture entitled Beyond Law’s Limits? Holding Nuclear-armed States to Account in the International Court of Justice takes place on Tuesday 7 March in The Friends Meeting House, 6 The Friars, Canterbury at 7pm (with tea, coffee and light refreshments available from 6.30pm). The lecture is free and open to all.

In the final lecture in the series, on Wednesday, 31 May, Dr Darren Dinsmore’s talk State of Emergency: On Turkey’s Gülenist Purge and the Defence of Human Rights will discuss the state of emergency in Turkey and raise questions such as: what limits can states place on human rights in times of emergency?, what is the likely response of the European Court of Human Rights to Turkey’s use of emergency powers?, and what is the role of human rights courts regarding systematic violations of human rights?
