Physics students at the University will represent the UK in an international competition to find the country with the most ‘kick-ass’ bachelor and masters students in the subject.

Four students from the University’s School of Physical Sciences won the national leg of the PLANCKS (Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kick-Ass Students)  2019 competition, beating off stiff competition from 18 other universities to come top.

The competition, run by the International Association of Physics Students, included a four-hour exam in London on 2 March, with Kent beating Edinburgh and Oxford universities in the top three going through to the final in Odense, Denmark in May.

Head of the School of Physical Sciences, Professor Nigel Mason, said: ‘We are delighted that our students have won through in such a prestigious competition and demonstrated, in part, knowledge we have imparted in our undergraduate courses. The School and University wishes them every success in the final in Odense.’

The third year physics undergraduates reaching the final are: Anthony Quinlan, Andrew Gowers, Ibrahim Mirza and William Buffett.
